About the cemetery

The Astrakhan Jewish Cemetery is a quiet corner of eternal memory on a hill near Pokrovskaya Grove in the Kirovsky district, along Nachalovskoye Highway. Officially founded in 1871 on the land of the Pokrovsky Monastery, the first burials of the Jewish community appeared here as early as the 18th century, with the oldest dated grave from 1848. The smallest of the city’s 14 necropolises (0.02 km²), it is divided into 9 sectors and holds more than 5,000 souls — rabbis, merchants and ordinary residents. Here the history of the Jewish people intertwines with the fate of the Volga region. Today the cemetery remains active thanks to the efforts of the Astrakhan Jewish community. Volunteers hold regular subbotniks, overcoming years of neglect, fires and vandalism, preserving the memory of their ancestors’ resilience. It is a living symbol of respect for roots, open to descendants.
